This August, California State Parks Foundation is excited to launch a new volunteer opportunity at The Forest of Nisene Marks State Park in partnership with the Advocates for Nisene Marks State Park.
Tucked into the Santa Cruz Mountains near Aptos, Nisene Marks is the kind of place where a short walk can easily turn into an afternoon of exploring. This summer, volunteers have an opportunity to experience the park in a different way by caring for the forest itself.
The first volunteer workday will focus on removing invasive English ivy near the park's Old Growth Loop. English ivy may look harmless, but it spreads quickly through the forest. As it climbs trees and blankets the forest floor, it crowds out native plants and makes it harder for the forest to thrive.
During the workday, volunteers will:
- Remove ivy climbing mature trees.
- Clear invasive ivy from the forest floor.
- Remove ivy regrowth from previously restored areas.
- Improve habitat for native plants and wildlife.
- Protect the long-term health of this remarkable redwood forest.
No experience is necessary. Volunteers will receive the tools, instruction, and support needed throughout the day, making it a great opportunity for both first-time and returning volunteers. Sign up today for our first workday on August 30, 2026.
