Celebrate Juneteenth at Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park

Published: June 2, 2026

Located in California's Central Valley, Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park preserves the story of a remarkable community founded by Black pioneers more than a century ago. Today, visitors can walk historic streets, explore restored buildings, and learn about the people who built the only town in California founded, financed, and governed by Black Americans.

On June 13, 2026, the park will once again serve as a place of gathering, learning, and celebration during its annual Juneteenth Celebration. Held as part of California State Parks Week, the event offers visitors a chance to explore the park's history, enjoy cultural performances, and connect with the community in a place deeply tied to California's Black heritage.

What Is Juneteenth?

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when news of emancipation finally reached enslaved people in Texas, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. Today, it is celebrated across the United States as a day to honor freedom, reflect on history, and recognize the resilience, achievements, and contributions of Black communities.

Through festivals, educational programs, music, food, and community gatherings, Juneteenth offers an opportunity to reflect on history while celebrating the achievements and contributions of Black Americans.

While Juneteenth is observed nationwide, few places in California offer a stronger connection to Black history than Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park.

Why Celebrate Juneteenth at Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park?

Founded in 1908 by Colonel Allen Allensworth and a group of Black leaders, the town of Allensworth was built to create new opportunities for Black families seeking greater independence and a better future. Families came to the area seeking the chance to own land, pursue education, and build a thriving community in California's Central Valley.

Walking through the park today offers a glimpse into that vision. Historic homes, public buildings, and reconstructed structures help tell the story of a community that left a lasting mark on California history. More than a century later, the park continues to preserve and share these stories with new generations.

Few places in California offer a more meaningful setting to celebrate Juneteenth than Allensworth itself. Visiting the park offers a chance to reflect on the obstacles Black Americans overcame while learning about the people who built a thriving community against the odds.
