VIDEO: Building a Fire Buffer at Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park

Published: October 21, 2024

Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park faces many wildfire threats due to its rural location. Many historic buildings have been standing since the 1800s and provide visitors a glimpse into the past during California's gold rush era. We partnered with California State Parks staff to develop a plan to create buffers around these buildings, which can protect them in the event of a wildfire. Each month, volunteers come out to the park and create a buffer zone of decomposed granite around a building and remove overgrown vegetation, which is also a fire risk.
