On June 24, 2026, California State Parks Foundation’s Parkside Chats Series webinar explored the history of immigration through Angel Island State Park. Parkside Chats is our virtual event series that highlights the people and programs working to protect, interpret, and strengthen California’s state parks.
We were joined by State Park Interpreter Cynthia Pu of California State Parks, who led participants through the historic Angel Island Immigration Station. During this virtual experience, attendees learned about the impact of the Chinese Exclusion Act, explored the barracks where immigrants were detained, and heard personal stories of resilience, protest, and the pursuit of new beginnings.
Together, we examined the experiences of immigrants who arrived through Angel Island in the early 1900s, the poems and inscriptions left behind by detainees, and the differences between immigration processing at Angel Island and Ellis Island.
We were grateful to host this conversation and help share the stories that continue to shape California’s history and identity.
