Parkside Chats: Honoring Indigenous Heritage in California State Parks

On August 27, 2025, California State Parks Foundation's Parkside Chats Series webinar explored how California State Parks honored Indigenous heritage through inclusive interpretation and community partnerships. Parkside Chats is our virtual event series featuring webinars and virtual tours that highlight the people and programs working to make our state parks more welcoming, accessible, and reflective of all Californians.

We were joined by Taylor Moore, Museum Curator I at the State Indian Museum and Sutter’s Fort State Historic Park, who shared how both sites were re-centering Native voices. This included a new exhibit focused on the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), which celebrates the return of cultural belongings to tribal communities, as well as updates on a more inclusive interpretive plan at Sutter’s Fort.

We were grateful to host this important conversation and to explore how state parks are continuing to evolve through deeper partnership and shared storytelling.
