Communications Assistant

California State Parks Foundation seeks a full-time Communications Assistant to join our team and work on our robust and growing communications program. Reporting to the Associate Director of Communications and Marketing, working closely with Digital Content Specialist, and collaborating with programs, government affairs, membership, and development staff, the Communications Assistant will manage the day-to-day implementation of social media content. The Communications Assistant will contribute to the production of online communications and support a variety of communications projects that reach a wide variety of audiences, including donors and members, volunteers, funders, policymakers, advocates, the media, and the public. Graphic design, writing, editing, and proofreading skills are preferred. Ability to speak and write in Spanish preferred.   

Reports to: Associate Director of Communications and Marketing 

Location: San Francisco, Sacramento, Los Angeles, or San Diego, California

Responsibilities:  

Social Media Content Creation (30%) 

  • Create content for the organization’s Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn accounts in line with the strategic plan of the organization’s goals.  

  • Develop original, compelling content for all social media. 

  • Work closely with programs team to communicate and promote programs within the California State Parks Foundation brand on a day-to-day basis. 

  • Oversee monthly online photo contest. 

  • Create social media graphics for day-to-day content when needed. 

  • Work with Digital Content Specialist to create content around video and digital storytelling. 

Social Media Community Management and Customer Support (30%) 

  • Manage online community of 100,000+ social media followers, including responding to questions and moderating posts. 

  • Provide exceptional customer support and education for our user base across multiple social media platforms, cultivating a community that people feel loyal and passionate about. 

  • Help California State Parks Foundation identify trends by collecting feedback and requests and work with Associate Director of Communications and Marketing to create actionable insights and improvements to processes, content, and programs. 

  • Help establish and manage relationships with target influencers.  

  • Enable elected officials, park advocates, influencers, and park users to be part of the dialogue through scalable social tactics. 

Execute Social Media Strategy (30%) 

  • Work closely with Associate Director of Communications and Marketing to implement content plans for promoting and covering California State Parks Foundation brand, programs, and initiatives via social channels. 

  • Work with Associate Director of Communications and Marketing to define tactics for expanding California State Parks Foundation’s social media audience. 

  • Assist with synthesize learning into best practices to maximize exposure across owned and social/shared platforms. 

  • Assist in managing paid social media.  

Other communications project assistance (10%): 

  • Work across departments to create content and mange email builds as needed. 

  • Support website updates and content creation as needed. 

  • Assist with the build of email marketing campaigns as needed. 

  • Work across departments to manage print, collateral, and other orders as needed. 

  • Administrative and other duties as needed or assigned. 

  • Support Digital Content Special with content gathering and creation as needed. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Experience creating social media content for a brand, company, or organization, including Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, and experience with social media content management software such as Hootsuite. 

  • Experience creating social media graphics and other graphic design experience preferred.  

  • Experience in Adobe Creative Suite or other programs such as Canva preferred. 

  • Extremely organized, process-oriented and able to manage a lot of moving pieces with exceptional attention to detail – really, really exceptional attention to detail. 

  • Able to work both independently and collaboratively across teams. 

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills. 

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office. 

  • Customer service experience a plus. 

  • Open to learning new skills and trying new things. 

  • Commitment to California State Parks Foundation’s mission. 

  • Able to attend events, sometimes on weekends or evenings, as necessary (infrequent travel required). California driver’s licenses preferred. 

  • Able to work at a computer for long periods of time, work in and move across an office setting, communicate with colleagues and constituents, and occasionally move items up to 25 lbs, with or without reasonable accommodation. 

 

COMPENSATION: This is a full-time, exempt position offering a starting salary of $55,000 annually and a generous benefits package including medical/dental/disability/life insurance, monthly equipment/cellphone allowance, 13 paid holidays plus paid sick and vacation time, and a 401(k) plan with 5% match after one year of service. Other benefits include pre-tax transit benefits, a flexible savings account and shared access to state park passes offering free entry to most California state parks. 
 

LOCATION: This position can be based remotely in San Francisco, Sacramento, Los Angeles, or San Diego, California. The position will be required to meet with other staff in person as needed.
