The Outdoor Youth Connection is a collaborative effort of the California State Parks, California State Parks Foundation and Pacific Leadership Institute. Using the outdoors as a tool, the OYC works with teens ages 14 to 17 who are involved in community based organizations to develop leadership and life skills while camping at a state park. The program includes opportunities for teambuilding, decision making, communication and hands-on experience in outdoor activities while meeting new people in an environment that is different from their concrete neighborhoods. With the outdoor skills and activities learned the participants organize and lead their own outdoor trips and service projects for their peers and community.
Funding for the Outdoor Youth Connection is provided by the Stewardship Council, Southern California Edison, and Save the Redwoods League.
We cultivate stewardship of state parks by hosting and funding a range of volunteer and educational programs aimed to support state parks.
We give direct support to state parks by offering a series of competitive grants to state park units, qualified nonprofits, government entities, and partners of state parks.
We serve as the independent voice for state parks by advocating for sound policies for state parks, including deferred maintenance support and adequate funding for parks.
