The California State Parks starring in Hollywood Films event this past weekend was a smashing success! On Saturday the sold-out crowd at The Paramount Theater enjoyed Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi, MASH (the movie) and two TV episodes of M*A*S*H. On Sunday at 20th Century Fox Studios’ Darryl F. Zanuck Theater, another large crowd enjoyed Spartacus followed by Planet of the Apes.
Lando Calrissian, aka Billy Dee Williams, gave a fantastic introduction to Star Wars, adding "I'm glad to be here. And I’m glad to be of some support to California's state parks.” Fans formed a long line to get Williams' autograph on Saturday.
After the movie, Mark Hamill, who played Luke Skywalker, thrilled the crowed with a long Q&A session with Lee Theisen. “I'm happy to be here, especially for this cause,” said Hamill of the film series.
Hamill went on to describe working in Grizzly Creek Redwoods and Jedediah Smith Redwoods state parks. “The scenery was just breathtaking. [They are some] of the most beautiful natural parks I've been in my life."
Mark Hamill so enjoyed his Q&A with Lee Theisen that he expressed dismay when it ended.
Trapper John, aka Elliott Gould, also did a Q&A with fans after the viewing of MASH on Saturday. "I'm very grateful to be able to come here to share. I believe there's nothing of more value than nature", Gould said. He then went on to explain how funny it was to pass by the set for Planet of the Apes while filming M*A*S*H. “It was even funnier than the movie ‘History of the World, Part 1,’ he said.
Sunday was just as exciting and full of stars. Lou Wagner, who played Lucius in Planet of the Apes, described the parks as: "One staggering view after another; and Malibu Creek State Park was fabulous, just fabulous."
Planet of the Apes make-up artist Daniel Striepeke said, "I love the state parks. Malibu Creek State Park, that terrain is unbelievable. It's so versatile. [All the parks] are such a great asset to the state and to the people of the state. I don't think we can do enough to preserve them."
After the Planet of the Apes panels, fans swarmed the stage to get autographs and ask even more questions.
