October 27th: California State Parks announced today that park districts across the state have finalized their Service Reduction Plans. While some service reductions began taking place shortly after the state budget was passed, the larger, more noticeable changes that include changes to park hours of operation are scheduled to be implemented on November 1.
The Service Reductions are one part of the $14.2 million, one-time budget savings plan Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger announced on September 25 to keep parks open with the least disruption to visitors.
Closing state parks is the very definition of "penny-wise, pound foolish". Consider the facts:
FACT: The General Fund budget that state parks receive account for less than 1/10 of one percent of the entire state budget.
FACT: Last year alone, there were over 80 million visitors to state parks – and all indications are that this year was going to be even higher.
FACT: For every dollar that funds the parks, $2.35 is returned to the state's General Fund through economic activities in the communities surrounding the parks.
