Every Day is Earth Day on a Bike

April 21, 2011

Any day you leave the car keys on the kitchen table and hop on a bike to commute, run errands, or just pedal around the neighborhood, you are sponsoring your own personal Earth Day. And it benefits everyone around you. Here are five simple things you can do on your bike to make every day Earth Day on a bike:

  1. Commute to work on your bike. The WBBC has ridden several thousand commute miles and saved hundreds of dollars (bus fare, gas, bridge tolls).
  2. If you aren’t a commuter, have an office bike that anyone can ride during the day to do simple errands like going to get a coffee or finding the closest ATM.
  3. Strap on the baskets or panniers and go shopping.
  4. Maybe you can’t ride to work, but think creatively about other places you can get to by bike. WBBC recently wrote about how you can park your bike at AT&T Park.
  5. Maybe you come from East Bay and can’t bike over the Bay Bridge. But you can bring a folding bike on BART any time of day (commute hours!) and ride in the city once you arrive.

Both the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition and the Marin County Bicycle Coalition have rides and events going on this weekend. They aren’t necessarily specific Earth Day events, but if they get you on your bike you are still making a statement. If you aren’t going to participate in an organized Earth Day event, which is just fine, try this—pick one day between Friday and Sunday and pledge to not drive all day and simply use your bike for any transportation need you have. You’ll probably be surprised at how easy it is.

What other simple tasks or errands can you do on your bike?
