WHAT: As part of the joint legislative hearing on the state of California's state parks, the California State Parks Foundation (CSPF) has partnered with Bobby Shriver, Save San Onofre Coalition, and other park advocates to highlight the increasing number of threats to state parks. At the hearing, legislators will examine important issues facing state parks including the funding crisis, threats posed by private and public-sector development and concerns about how to protect state parks for the future. The hearing, jointly hosted by Senate Natural Resources and Water Committee and Assembly Water, Parks and Wildlife Committee, will also involve other environmental and park advocacy organizations, including the California State Park Rangers Association, California League of Park Associations and others.
WHY: State parks are meant for public use and offer Californians a way to experience nature and gain a greater understanding of California's rich and varied history and culture. Yet they are increasingly experiencing a variety of threats to their existence. In the wake of the Governor's earlier proposal to close state parks, the bleak funding picture for the state park system was made obvious. A proposal to address the underfunding of the state park system – the State Park Access Pass – could be included in the budget this year to bring fiscal relief to the system. At the same time, toll roads, power lines, desalinization plants, commercial development and other threats encroach upon California's natural and historical treasures.
