Support legislation to get youth outdoors

The State Legislature concluded session for the year on August 31 and successfully passed Assembly Bill 2534 and Assembly Bill 2614. CSPF endorsed these significant bills that would give more of California’s youth the opportunity to have enriched, meaningful experiences in the outdoors, ultimately fostering the future generation of empowered park stewards.

Help these bills pass into law by letting Governor Jerry Brown know how much Californians support connecting youth to their parks and the outdoors. Use your voice today by sending a letter to Governor Brown and to let him know you support Assembly Bill 2534, Assembly Bill 2614 and our parks!

Spring 2018 grant round

We are excited to announce that we recently awarded ten grants totaling just over $129,000 to community organizations across the state! As part of the Our Parks, Our Future initiative and CSPF’s commitment to creating meaningful experiences for youth in state parks, we held an invitation-only grant round this spring focused on increasing youth access in state parks, particularly to underserved communities. This enabled us to gain a deeper understanding of existing programs in the field, form new partnerships with youth-focused organizations and understand how programs measure and demonstrate impact so that we can improve our ability to amplify the work of our grantees.

Each of these grantees offer youth-focused programs that work to expand access, improve equity and maintain park excellence. Learn more about these ten amazing organizations here.

Behind the scenes of a Park Champions first workday

California has 280 beautiful state parks, though many need consistent, sustainable volunteer to support to help maintain that beauty. Our Park Champions program was created to help with just that. Last year we hosted workdays in over 50 state parks across California, and this past year we were thrilled to be able to add new parks to that list!

We caught up with Philip Oakley Otto, our Southern California Field Consultant, to talk to him about first workdays and what goes into bringing a new park into the Park Champions program. Click here to read the full story on our blog!

August Photo of the Month winner

Congratulations to Paula Schultz, whose photo of a lone surfer at Russian Gulch State Park is August’s Photo of the Month winner!

Paula is an avid support of California state parks and believes “being surrounded by untouched nature is one of the most humbling and restorative things to experience, and that is why visiting our local state parks is so important. We must make it known that we really do need parks, and that parks really do need us.”

You could be our next winner! Join our My California State Parks Flickr group to become part of a community of photographers and park lovers sharing their images. Once a month, a winner is selected to win a prize!
