Underwater State Parks!

What a way to kick off summer and enjoy the months ahead! Experience a State Park in a totally different way...under water! If you are a diver there are several options, just visit www.parks.ca.gov and enter “underwater parks” in the search block.

Tide Pool Exploration, San Elijo SB, on old Hwy 101 in Cardiff
June 1, 2009 - December 31, 2009

Start summer by exploring the tide pools at San Elijo SB. The best time to explore is from one to two hours prior to an extremely low tide. It’s a great opportunity to learn about the plants and animals that inhabit this area. Call to check the schedule of tide pool walks, which can be either guided or self-guided. (760) 753-5091.

16th Annual Festival at the Cement Ship, Seacliff SB, 5.5 miles South of Santa Cruz

Celebrate the unique history of the WW1 Concrete Ship Palo Alto, the natural wonders of Seacliff’s fossil beds, and the many animals that call the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary their home. Enjoy music, fun and food. Experience the park’s history through arts, crafts, games and stories. Make a kite to fly on the beach. Visit educational booths to learn about our animal friends. Find the perfect gift in our Park Store or at one of the vendor’s booths. Seacliff State Beach is located of Highway 1 in Aptos. From Santa Cruz, take Highway 1 south to the State Park Drive exit. Coloma Blues Live!, Henningsen Lotus Park, Lotus

Coloma Blues Live at Henningsen-Lotus Park Enjoy an all-day blues festival with your family along the shore of the American River in the beautiful Coloma Valley. Headliners to be determined. All proceeds benefit the Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park educational programs, the Arts in Education Programs of the El Dorado Arts Council, and the Educational Programs of the Coloma-Louts Chamber of Commerce. After the Fire Hike, Angel Island State Park
June 7, 2009

Join this all-day hike to places affected by the October wildfire -- both those burned and those saved. Learn about the historic sites and impact on vegetation. The hike is about 5 miles along park trails and fire road, held rain or shine. Take the earliest ferry from San Francisco or Tiburon and meet at 10:30am at the Island gift shop. Return on the last ferry at 3:20pm. Bring hiking shoes, layered clothing, water, lunch, camera, and binoculars. Group size limited. Civil War Days, Angel Island SP, San Francisco Bay
June 13, 2009 - June 14, 2009

Bring the family, take a picnic, catch a ferry ride and discover the day in the life of a Civil War soldier at historic Camp Reynolds. Activities include: baking in an historic brick oven, music, historic guided site tours, cannon and musket firings, flag signaling, rope and doll making and much more. From the dock; a shuttle service is available for $5 from Ayala Cove, or take the short walk to get there and enjoy the beautiful view. The event is free and begins at 11 a.m. with the raising of the flag and ends at 3:30 p.m. with the striking of the colors. The event is free. Annual Juneteenth Celebration, Colonel Allensworth SHP, 8 miles West of Earlimart
June 13, 2009

Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration of the ending of slavery. It was on June 19th that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that all slaves were now free. This was 2 ½ years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, which had become official January 1, 1863. The day is celebrated by African Americans throughout the southwest. Revisit the exciting and controversial hydraulic gold mining era of the 1870’s! Enjoy blue grass music featuring Mountain Laurel, Alkali-Last of the 49ers, the Andersen Family Band, barbecue picnic, wagon rides, craft demonstrations, candle making and tin punching. June 16, 2009

Civil War Days at Fort Tejon SHP, 37 miles South of Bakersfield on I-5
June 21, 2009 - June 22, 2009

See the troops of the Infantry, Cavalry and Artillery from the Union and Confederate Armies. Battles are at 10:30 a.m., 12Noon and 1:30 p.m. Mock battles are approximately 30 minutes in length. Guided tours are offered of the Union and Confederate camps between the battles. Living history demonstrations are Manual of Arms, Artillery, Civilian Life and Field Hospital demonstrations.
