Golden Poppy Award Honorees

The Golden Poppy Awards are presented to individuals, corporations or foundations for their extraordinary contributions to protect and enhance state parks and the California environment.

Caroline Beteta
President & CEO of Visit California

This year the California State Parks Foundation is thrilled to recognize Caroline Beteta as a Golden Poppy Honoree. Caroline Beteta currently serves as the ‎President & CEO of Visit California (formerly known as the California Travel & Tourism Commission), a non-profit organization with a mission to develop and maintain marketing programs, in partnership with the state’s travel industry, that keep California top-of-mind as a premier travel destination.

Ms. Beteta has played an instrumental role in the production of Visit California television commercials featuring many A-List stars that we all know and love. Our beloved state parks can be found in these cinematic advertisements and we have Caroline to thank for bringing tens of millions of additional visitors to our state every year. California State Parks have been positively affected by this influx in tourism resulting in the growth of nearly eight million park visitors from 2011 to 2014. We thank Caroline for her extraordinary leadership in ensuring that state parks continue to provide recreation, adventure, renewal and inspiration to all Californians and visitors from around the world.

The David and Lucile Packard Foundation

In 2009, the David and Lucile Packard Foundation generously funded a pilot program to introduce the educational benefits of California’s state parks to youngsters in urban and low-income communities.

The Packard Foundation, the California State Parks Foundation, the California Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR), and the Partnership for Children and Youth worked together to build relationships and extend resources to these underserved communities where kids risked experiencing a “learning gap” during the summer months.

and Partnership for Children and Youth

As a chief collaborator in implementing The Packard Summer Learning Program, the Partnership for Children & Youth has been instrumental in expanding and improving summer learning programs throughout California, with a focus on children who are most in-need.

Through strong advocacy efforts, they have spearheaded three successful California legislative measures in support of summer learning, co-authored key federal policy language improving how federal after-school funding is administered at the local level, and won sweeping policy reforms in California’s after-school funding system, vastly improving services to children most in need.

The Partnership for Children & Youth’s benchmarking and data analysis have demonstrated the significant effects of summer learning programs in diminishing “summer learning loss.” Not only have students shown significant gains in reading and vocabulary after participating in a summer learning program, but parents believe their children developed leadership and social skills, and improved their overall attitude towards school.
