Come to an Earth Day Open House

You’re invited to celebrate Earth Day and our state parks on April 13 at five free open houses across California. Through guided park explorations, music, arts and crafts, volunteer opportunities and much more, these family-friendly open houses will offer special activities and a new perspective on each park’s history, unique habitats, wildlife and recreation opportunities. Learn more about each open house below – we can’t wait to meet you there!

Registration is not required to attend an open house. Space is limited for volunteer projects, preregistration is encouraged to reserve your volunteer spot.

China Camp State Park

San Rafael | 9:00am-3:00pm

Join us at China Camp State Park to explore this once Chinese shrimp fishing village and take in beautiful natural views of the San Pablo Bay.

Open house activities:

9:00am-3:00pm: Chinese Games, museum tours, wildflower walks, soccer relays (ages 6 and up), scavenger hunts, arts and crafts, and more

9:30am: Spanish language bird watching hike with naturalist Marco Berger

10:30am: All ages exploration of the Turtle Back nature trail with Sarah Ferner from National Estuarine Research Reserve

12:30 Wildflower Hike with naturalist 12:30-2:30pm beginning at the Village

12:30 -1:30 Mini soccer relays lead by Intern Julio Ruiz and local soccer coaches

1:00pm Birdwatching (in English) with naturalist Jerry Begins at Miwok Meadows

Volunteer project:

9:00am-noon: Volunteer to help remove invasive plants and repair split rail fencing. All ages welcome (minors must bring a waiver signed by a legal guardian). To reserve your volunteer spot, register now.

Folsom Lake State Recreation Area

Folsom | 8:00am-2:00pm

Join us at Folsom Lake State Recreation Area for day of exploration! Discover the parks many recreational opportunities, enjoy gorgeous scenic views, and learn how you can become a part of the parks community of stewards.

Open house activities:

Are you an early bird or a budding photographer? Reserve your spot for the below hikes here!Space is limited. Choices include:

  • 8:00 am: Bird walk
  • 9:00 am and noon: nature photography hikes
  • 9:30 am: Family Investigation of Lake Natoma Birds

10am-2pm: Citizen science projects, a fish viewing tank, crafts, booths run by local community groups and more

Volunteer project:

10:00am-12:30pm: Volunteer to help environmental scientists restore native habitat by removing invasive plants, or try paddling in a kayak and helping clean the waterways. Choose which you want to do when you arrive on site. All ages welcome (minors must bring a waiver signed by a legal guardian). To reserve your volunteer spot, register now.

Half Moon Bay State Beach

Half Moon Bay | 10:00am to 3:00pm

Join us at Half Moon Bay State Beach for a day of exploration along the California coast. Discover the parks shoreline habitats, take a nature walk along the trails, and enjoy the diverse wildlife views.

Open house activities:

10:00am-3:00pm: Nature themed crafts, booth passports, children's games, guided tours led by park docents and live entertainment from local musicians and dance groups.

Old Town San Diego State Historic Park

San Diego | 10:00am to 3:00pm

Take a step back in time at Old Town San Diego Historic Park! Join us to learn about the story of early California settlements, to honor the Kumeyaay Native Americans and celebrate California’s natural history in the park’s Native Plant Garden.

Open house activities:

10:00am - 3:00pm: Basket-making, planting seeds to take home, building bird feeders, tours about native plants and the Kumeyaay nation and much more.

10:30am, 11:30am, 1:30pm, 2:30 pm: Guided Native Landscape Tours

10:00am -2:45 pm: Kids crafts, games and selfie booth

Volunteer project:

10:30am- 12:30pm: Volunteer to maintain the native plant garden. We will remove invasive weeds, plant native plants and repair fences. All ages welcome (minors must bring a waiver signed by a legal guardian). To reserve your volunteer spot, register now.

Rio de Los Angeles State Park

Los Angeles | 9:00am-3:00pm

Join us at Rio de Los Angeles for a unique urban state park experience! This former railyard is now a beautiful park where you can recreate, connect with nature, and reflect on the city’s history along the LA River.

Open house activities:

11:00am – 2:30pm Community partners will have informational booths and host workshops about water harvesting, mulching, community mapping and climate change and more. Partners include:

11:00am - 2:30pm: Guided walks of the Los Angeles River, wildflower seed bomb stations, birdwalks, and arts and crafts.

  • Guided walk to the Los Angeles River by Community Nature Connection and Friends of the LA River
  • “Seed bomb” making with Abuelas de Rio
  • Water harvesting (mulching workshop) with Generation Green
  • Spatial Awareness Network: Historical walk to the LA River including community mapping and climate change strategies (biking/pedestrian access to green spaces).
  • Garden and habitat walking tours by Park Champions
  • Guided Bird Walks from Audubon Center at Debs

2:30pm – 2:45pm: Climate resilient activity participant winners announced
